How to Capture Your Desktop Screen Using Microsoft Expression Encoder

Ever wanted to capture what you're seeing on screen frame by frame and make a video out of it? It's not hard to find a program to capture your screen but this one from microsoft will make your life easier.

This program called Encoder 4 will help you record your screen, save it as any video file type you desire (for free version, you are only allowed to export it as a wmv file. All you have to do to get this program is go to microsoft.com/expression/products/Encoder4_Overview.aspx and click on Download Free Edition. On the next page, click Download Now on the Expression Encoder 4 with SP1 box.

Save the file and install it afterwards. Through the start menu, expand the Microsoft Expression folder and open the Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Screen Capture. On the screen capture window, you will be given certain options but to start recording, click on the record button. After this, you will be given an option to choose which part/parts of the screen to record.

After recording what you want, your recording will be saved in xesc format. To be able to edit your recording and export it as a regular video format, you can open Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 in the program's Start Menu folder. In here you can save your work in wmv format if you have the free version.

There you have it, a free screen recorder right from Microsoft itself. Having a free version is not a problem because you can always convert the wmv to another format you like using the video converter of your choice.

See the screen captures below.

  3. Yes, it does. The only difference in the free version is the file type you can export your video into.
